Datafast vs PayPhone vs Kushki: which payment gateway to choose in Ecuador

In Ecuador, the payment gateway is not a technical detail to sort out at the end: it is the difference between a customer finishing the purchase or abandoning it at the last step. And there is a very local factor that outsiders rarely understand: here people buy on deferred terms, in installments, and a store that does not offer that option leaves money on the table every day. That is why choosing between Datafast, PayPhone and Kushki deserves more than a rushed decision.

The three in one sentence

Datafast is the veteran: a card payment processor with strong bank backing, the one used by many of the country’s large merchants and the reference when we talk about regular and deferred payment.

PayPhone is the agile option: an Ecuadorian mobile wallet that also charges cards, with a simple sign-up, made for entrepreneurs and small businesses that want to start charging quickly.

Kushki is the technology bet: a regional payment aggregator, with APIs designed for developers and several payment methods, ideal for businesses that want to scale or integrate custom.

How I see it

After integrating gateways in several Ecuadorian stores, my rule is simple and almost always right: the decision is set by deferred payment and where your business is right now. If you sell high-ticket products and your customers buy in installments, Datafast is almost mandatory: not offering deferred payment in Ecuador is giving sales away. If you are just starting and want to charge as soon as possible without getting tangled, PayPhone gets you going in days. And if you have a technical team and plan to grow or integrate custom, Kushki gives you the control the others do not.

What I do not recommend is choosing purely by the lowest fee. A gateway that saves you a few cents per transaction but does not offer the deferred payment your customer expects, or takes weeks to integrate, costs you far more in lost sales. Look first at how your customer pays; the price, after.

At Codegea we do payment gateway integration for WooCommerce, including deferred payment, and connect it to SRI electronic invoicing so every sale generates its receipt. If you want to set up your online store in Ecuador or change gateway without breaking anything, let us talk and we will sort it out.
