Headless CMSs have become the usual way to separate content from the website that displays it. Among the most used open source ones are Payload, Strapi and Directus, and all three work; the difference lies in their philosophy and how well they fit your project. This guide compares them with practical criteria. We already published a comparison of two of them, [Directus vs Strapi](/en/directus-vs-strapi-which-headless-cms-to-choose-for-your-project), and here we add Payload, the one we use on this site.

> There is no best CMS. There is the one that looks most like how your team works and what your content is like.

## The philosophy of each

- **Payload:** *code-first*. You define your collections and fields in TypeScript code, and the admin panel is generated from that schema. Since version 3 it installs inside a Next.js application.
- **Strapi:** *panel-first*. You create content types from a visual interface (Content-Type Builder) and the system generates the API. It has a large community and many plugins.
- **Directus:** *database-first*. It connects to a SQL database, existing or new, and adds a panel and API on top, without imposing how the data is structured.

## Comparison

| Criterion | Payload | Strapi | Directus |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Approach | Schema in code | Visual builder | On top of your database |
| Language | TypeScript | JavaScript / TypeScript | Node.js (extensions in JS/TS) |
| Next.js integration | Inside the same project | Separate service (API) | Separate service (API) |
| Admin panel | Generated from code, very configurable | Mature and well known | Very flexible, data-oriented |
| Database | Several (SQL and MongoDB) through adapters | Several SQL databases | Several SQL databases, including an existing one |
| Multilingual | Localizable fields | i18n plugin | Translations per data model |
| Permissions and roles | Access control in code | Roles and permissions in the panel | Very granular permissions |
| Content preview | Live Preview available | Requires its own setup | Requires its own setup |
| Ideal for | Sites and apps in Next.js with a single deployment | Teams that want to define content visually | Existing or highly relational data |

## When to choose Payload

- Your site is in **Next.js** and you want **a single project**, with types shared between content and frontend.
- You prefer to define the schema **in code** and version it with Git.
- You need **multilingual support, roles and preview** built in.
- Your team is comfortable with TypeScript.

We compare it with WordPress in [headless WordPress vs Payload CMS](/en/headless-wordpress-vs-payload-cms-for-marketing-sites).

## When to choose Strapi

- You want **editors or non-developers** to define content types from an interface.
- You value a **large community** and a plugin ecosystem.
- Your frontend is not necessarily Next.js and you prefer an independent API.
- You are looking for a well-known option on the market, with many use cases.

## When to choose Directus

- **You already have a SQL database** and want a panel and API on top.
- Your data is **highly relational** and does not fit the idea of "just web content".
- You need **very granular permissions** or internal data flows.
- You want the CMS not to impose its own schema. We analyze it in [Directus: a comprehensive look](/en/directus-comprehensive-look-open-source-cms-for-managing-sql-databases).

## Hosting and maintenance

- **Payload** is deployed alongside your Next.js application (for example, on a platform that supports Next.js), with the database you choose.
- **Strapi and Directus** are independent services: they need their own server and database, in addition to the frontend.

More pieces means more things to watch. To understand how infrastructure is looked after, read [VPS server maintenance](/en/vps-server-maintenance-essential-monthly-checklist).

## Licenses

All three can be used for free in their open source version, but their **licenses and paid plans differ** and change over time. Check each project's current terms before deciding, especially if your company is large or you need enterprise features.

## How to decide in five questions

1. **What is your frontend?** If it is Next.js, Payload simplifies a lot.
2. **Who defines the schema, developers or editors?**
3. **Do you have existing data** that must coexist with the CMS?
4. **How many languages, roles and approval flows** do you need?
5. **Who will maintain the infrastructure?**

## Our recommendation

For sites and applications in Next.js, we prefer Payload for having a single project and a versioned schema. For projects with an existing database, we evaluate Directus; and for teams that want a visual builder, Strapi is a solid option. We decide it with your case in front of us.
