In Ecuador, the payment gateway is not a technical detail to sort out at the end: it is the difference between a customer finishing the purchase or abandoning it at the last step. And there is a very local factor that outsiders rarely understand: here people buy **on deferred terms**, in installments, and a store that does not offer that option leaves money on the table every day. That is why choosing between **Datafast**, **PayPhone** and **Kushki** deserves more than a rushed decision.

## The three in one sentence

**Datafast** is the veteran: a card payment processor with strong bank backing, the one used by many of the country’s large merchants and the reference when we talk about regular and deferred payment.

**PayPhone** is the agile option: an Ecuadorian mobile wallet that also charges cards, with a simple sign-up, made for entrepreneurs and small businesses that want to start charging quickly.

**Kushki** is the technology bet: a regional payment aggregator, with APIs designed for developers and several payment methods, ideal for businesses that want to scale or integrate custom.

## General comparison

| Criterion | Datafast | PayPhone | Kushki |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Type | Processor with bank backing | Mobile wallet + cards | Regional aggregator (API-first) |
| Ideal profile | Medium and large merchants | Entrepreneurs and small businesses | Tech and expanding businesses |
| Deferred payment | Its great strength | Available | Available depending on the bank |
| Ease of sign-up | More paperwork and requirements | Quick and simple | Medium (integration-oriented) |
| WooCommerce integration | Possible, sometimes requires development | Plugin and more direct process | Via API or connectors |
| Technical approach | Traditional | Plug and play | For developers |

An important clarification before continuing: **fees and conditions change** frequently and depend on your volume and your agreement with each provider. Always take them as a reference and confirm current rates directly with each one before deciding.

## Datafast: pros and cons

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Leader in regular and deferred payment, key to selling in Ecuador. | Slower sign-up process with more requirements. |
| Bank backing and established brand trust. | Integration usually requires custom development. |
| Ideal for merchants with volume and high ticket. | Less agile for an entrepreneur just starting out. |

## PayPhone: pros and cons

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Quick, simple sign-up: you start charging in a short time. | Less oriented to complex custom integrations. |
| Mobile wallet with good adoption among users. | For very high volumes it may fall short. |
| Relatively direct WooCommerce integration. | Less fine control over the payment flow. |

## Kushki: pros and cons

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Powerful APIs and documentation made for developers. | Requires a technical profile to really take advantage of it. |
| Several payment methods and regional presence to scale. | Less plug and play than PayPhone for a non-technical person. |
| Flexibility for integrations and custom flows. | Deferred payment depends on the bank and the configuration. |

## Which to choose for your business

| Your business | Recommendation | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Medium or large merchant that sells in installments | Datafast | Its strength is deferred payment and bank backing. |
| Entrepreneur or small business that wants to start now | PayPhone | Quick sign-up and simple integration. |
| Business with a technical team that integrates custom | Kushki | Flexible APIs made for developers. |
| Store aiming to grow in the region | Kushki | Regional presence and several payment methods. |
| WooCommerce store with high ticket and customers who finance | Datafast | Deferred payment closes sales that would otherwise be lost. |

## How I see it

After integrating gateways in several Ecuadorian stores, my rule is simple and almost always right: the decision is set by **deferred payment** and where your business is right now. If you sell high-ticket products and your customers buy in installments, Datafast is almost mandatory: not offering deferred payment in Ecuador is giving sales away. If you are just starting and want to charge as soon as possible without getting tangled, PayPhone gets you going in days. And if you have a technical team and plan to grow or integrate custom, Kushki gives you the control the others do not.

What I do not recommend is choosing purely by the lowest fee. A gateway that saves you a few cents per transaction but does not offer the deferred payment your customer expects, or takes weeks to integrate, costs you far more in lost sales. Look first at how your customer pays; the price, after.
